Library
Our highly specialized library is located on the mezzanine floor, halfway between the workshops and seminar rooms. Since the MIM program was founded in 1988, it has become an integral part of teaching and learning.
In addition to approx. 3000 books, 1000 recordings, over 200 technical drawings, online resources such as access to the "Tarisio" database and "The Journal of the Acoustical Society of America" are among the highlights of this place of learning. A number of journals are also available in print. analog form. These include the collection of "theStrad Magazine", with almost all issues since 1984.
The core sections of the library location include: history of musical instruments, music-historical reference works, acoustics, ethnomusicology and materials science, but also practical specialist literature in the field of string and plucked instrument making. Despite the wide-ranging inventory, work is constantly being done to expand and complete the literature provided. For this purpose, not only are professional journals subscribed to, but also new books are purchased on the recommendation of teachers and students.
Among the independent publications, are books that are particularly exciting from a technical point of view. These include, for example, the eight-part series on the work of Stradivari (by J. Thöne and J. Röhrmann), "Traite de Lutherie" with construction designs for string instruments (by F. Denis), or the biographical work of the guitar maker Romanillos with portraits of many instruments and their details (by J. Romanillos and J. Melo). Last but not least, a large regional collection on Vogtland instrument making is available.
An exceptional source of knowledge is also presented in the form of the student's work. Research papers as well as bachelor's, master's and diploma theses have been stored here since the program was founded. These documents are available to the students for their own projects and research.
The library also provides extensive support in the search for suitable sources and for academic research. This collected knowledge can be used as inspiration for new study projects or for literature research.
