The hallmark of the Musical Instrument Making degree program is the close intermeshing of craftsmanship and art, technology and design, science and intuition.  These are fundamental in musical instrument making. Therefore, our program includes courses in musicology, cultural and art history, acoustics and technology, materials science, and design-oriented topics to meet the demands of this profession and research field. Research findings a are directly integrated into the course offered.

Transferring and utilizing practice-relevant scientific methods and knowledge into one's own work is an essential competence for prospective musical instrument makers. The latest research findings, technological developments and digital solutions are confronted using the knowledge and experience gained in practice. The ability to explain constructional and tonal aspects is central, as is the ability to further develop one's own project through scientific findings and to make it marketable as a perfected instrument.
