Bachelor's degree in Musical Instrument Making

The Bachelor's degree program in Musical Instrument Making teaches knowledge and skills that enable students to design and build high-quality, artistically designed and handcrafted modern and historical musical instruments.The range of courses therefore includes both courses to impart comprehensive knowledge and skills in the artisanal tradition of musical instrument making as well as the teaching of current knowledge and modern methods from a wide range of relevant scientific disciplines.The Musical Instrument Making degree program is divided into the fields of study String Instrument Making and Plucked Instrument Making. The fields of study are largely offered as compulsory elective modules.

String instrument making

The String Instrument Making course provides students with the knowledge and skills required to design and build high-quality, artistically designed and handcrafted string instruments. In the foundation course, the focus is on the violin, viola and cello, whereby the models are made according to both classical models and the student's own designs. The main course also allows students to study historical string instruments of the viola da braccio and viola da gamba family. Modules on bow making and repair are offered in the 5th and 7th semesters.

Plucked Instrument Making

The plucked instrument making course teaches knowledge and skills that enable students to design and build high-quality, artistically designed and handcrafted plucked instruments. In the foundation course, the focus is on classical guitar models in German and Spanish construction. The main course also allows students to study historical plucked instruments of the lute and guitar family. As part of project and research work, students can choose to work on topics in the field of experimental plucked instrument making, steel string and bass guitar making, etc.

Start of studies

The Bachelor's degree course in Musical Instrument Making can be started in the winter semester.

Duration of study

The standard period of study for the Bachelor's degree course in Musical Instrument Making is 8 semesters. Students earn 240 ECTS credits.

Degree

The course concludes with a Bachelor of Arts in Musical Instrument Making.
