Studying in Markneukirchen
The course of studies in Musical Instrument Making is anchored in the so called traditional Musikwinkel, the "center of German orchestral instrument making" and at the same time internationally oriented. Within the West Saxon University of Applied Sciences Zwickau and as part of the Faculty of Applied Arts, the study program Musical Instrument Making offers practice-oriented academic qualification opportunities in musical instrument making for domestic and foreign students.
Since its foundation, one of the most architecturally interesting buildings in Markneukirchen has been available to the course of studies as a teaching, working and concert venue. Under the name "Merz-Villa" it has become a household name for Markneukirchen and its surroundings. Curt Merz, a local manufacturer and owner of a trading company for musical instruments, commissioned the building shortly before the beginning of the 20th century. Today it houses workshops, lecture and seminar rooms, an acoustics laboratory and an extensive library. The spacious foyer is used for concerts, conferences and exhibitions.
The course of studies in musical instrument making is taught according to the workshop
principle: each student has his or her own workstation. A lively exchange between teachers
and students as well as fellow students of higher semesters with those who are at the
beginning of their studies creates a positive, productive and open study atmosphere.
Supporting our students individually is a major concern for us! Therefore, we advise and
