Study in Schneeberg

Schneeberg?
Aha ... and where is that?
You can study there? Design?

Yes!

Schneeberg the small baroque town with 15,000 inhabitants located in the middle of the
mining region Erzgebirge does not at first glance give the impression of a "place to be"
when it comes to studying, let alone studying design.
But with the necessary foresight, you will come to appreciate the advantages of this small
town and of studying at the Schneeberg Faculty of Applied Arts (Angewandte Kunst
Schneeberg - AKS for short). Schneeberg looks back on a long mining tradition and both the
image of the region and the mentality of its inhabitants are still shaped by this time.
However, the mountain town has developed steadily and should not be underestimated.
Schneeberg with its numerous creative minds combines the traditional with new ideas and is
therefore a welcome location for us the AKS.

The roots of the faculty reach far back into the 19th century. It developed from the former
Schneeberg Royal Lace Making School, which was founded in 1878. High-quality bobbin lace
found its way from here all over the world.
The affinity to wood is in principle a standard in the Erzgebirge. The densely wooded region,
shaped by mining, used the renewable material not only for technical and architectural
masterpieces. Here also developed an extensive and affectionate use for folk art and toys -
we are world-famous for it.
In the meantime, we are part of the West Saxon University of Applied Sciences Zwickau as a
faculty, which has further locations in Reichenbach and in Markneukirchen.

You can study wood design / furniture and product design, textile art / textile design or
fashion design with the degrees Bachelor of Arts (B.A.) or Master of Arts (M.A.). With about
150 students, the study program is very informal with individual exchange between teachers
and students. Our small campus, consisting of the "Textilhaus" (Textile House), the
"Holzhaus" (Wood House) and the main building, in which the Fashion Design Department,
the library, the assembly hall, the printing workshop and drawing rooms of the basic studies
are located, is completed by the student dormitory - so everything is close together. In
addition, you can expect extensively equipped workshops and studio rooms with their own
workstations and plenty of space for your ideas.

In summer, there are barbecues in front of the “Holzhaus”, small flea markets take place
here and there, or you can simply enjoy the breaks in the green. If you want to experience
something besides your studies, you can do it on your own.
On our campus there is also the so-called "Keller", our student club, where many legendary
partys are being celebrated until the next morning.
